ATHEX: French jitters affect Greek bourse too

The tremors on bourses at the heart of the eurozone reached the bloc’s outskirts too on Friday, with stocks at Athinon Avenue losing significant ground and the benchmark taking a nosedive to a two-month low, on a day of increased turnover due to the extensive sell-off. If the upcoming parliamentary election in France generates more uncertainty there, the effects will also be felt in Greece.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,406.91 points, shedding 2.19% from Thursday’s 1,438.44 points. On a weekly basis it declined 3.53%.

The large-cap FTSE-25 index contracted 2.45%, ending at 3,411.35 points, and the banks index conceded 3.47%, on Alpha parting with 4.79%, Eurobank falling 4.70%, Piraeus giving up 4.26% and National sliding 1.10%.

PPC dropped 3.37% and Viohalco lost 3.23%.

In total 11 stocks posted gains, 100 suffered losses and 13 remained unchanged.

Turnover was the highest of the last couple of weeks, amounting to 140.1 million euros, up from Thursday’s €83.5 million.

In Nicosia, the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange decreased 0.37% to close at 163.06 points.
