Twin deficit in energy’s special accounts

Twin deficit in energy’s special accounts

The scope for extending horizontal subsidies on electricity bills is ever narrower as revenue from the capping mechanism in the wholesale market is drying out and new holes have to be plugged.

The government must immediately manage the double deficit of the Special Account for Utilities and the RES Special Account so that it does not soar by year-end but that it comes down to zero without having to proceed with bill hikes.

It would have been completely different if, in 2022, a total of over 1.5 billion euros had not been transferred by ministerial decisions from the above accounts to finance the bill subsidies.
