Young consumers more likely to use cash than older people
Young people are more likely to pay in cash than their elders, who opt for plastic money.
Research by Focus Bari on the payment methods Greeks prefer shows that, as a means of payment, cash is the top preference for 21% of young people aged 18-24, and for 18% of young people aged 25-34, while in the 55-64 age bracket this drops to 16% and to 13% over the age of 65.
Pocket money and the fact that many young people get undeclared wages can largely explain their preference for this type of payment. In contrast, older people are now more inclined to use a debit card, the top preference for 38% of over-65s.
