Amendment to cap profit for sale of subsidized home appliances

Domestic appliance retailers that gouge prices during a state-sponsored program that offers households subsidies to buy energy-efficient appliances face fines ranging from 5,000 to one million euros, under an amendment approved by MPs on Tuesday.

The “Change my appliance” scheme encourages consumers to switch to more energy-efficient models by offering a subsidies to replace old air-conditioning units, refrigerators and freezers.

The amendment restricts gross profits on the sale of each appliance to the equivalent profit per unit up until December 31, 2021 in a bid to avert price-gouging and protect consumer purchasing power. [AMNA]
