Tectonics | Athens | To June 18
The Onassis Cultural Center is hosting Tectonics, the brainchild of celebrated conductor Ilan Volkov which began in 2012 in Iceland – the only point on the globe where the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North America meet on land – and has since traveled to Glasgow, New York, Oslo, Reykjavik, Adelaide and Tel Aviv, breaking down musical barriers along the way and bringing together seemingly incompatible musical practices. The festival will take place at the OCC's headquarters (107-109 Syngrou), starting on Saturday, June 17, at 5 p.m. Performances will take place in different parts of the center, and will include a concert of two new pieces and one older composition by Italian ethnomusicologist Giuliano D'Angiolini, who has been researching the traditional music of Karpathos for the past 20 years.
He will join forces with the distinguished flautist Manuel Zurria and musicians from the Dodecanese island. Also, bassoon player Dafne Vicente-Sandoval will perform the world premiere of Tashi Wada's “Witness,” and Greece's Danae Stefanou and Michalis Moschoutis will make their official Greek debut as a duo after the recent release of their digital album “Crease” on Coherent States.
The program on Sunday, June 18, includes two works for string trio by Orestis Toufektsis, a music professor in Austria who explores algorithmic composition and electronic music, as well as 30-minute shows by free-jazz/freak-out trio Mama Luma, genre-smashing cellist Lori Goldston and noise music composer Nate Young.
