Your Clean Monday fare

Lenten food such as olives, taramas, salads, the traditional unleavened lagana bread, halvah and wine in a pottery jug on a metal cafe table, the customary way to spend Clean Monday, the first day of Lent in the Orthodox calendar. Artist Spyros Vassileiou’s straw hat is at the ready – March sunshine can be surprisingly hot – for the afternoon kite-flying. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth, in Galaxidi. A sudden illness has forced his widow Kiki to cancel invitations she had issued for Clean Monday. But the spirit of the occasion, not to mention the flavors, are there on canvas.
