Seminar, Eleftheriou, new journal

Calling all audiovisual professionals who would like to learn how to turn books into film scripts for a free seminar April 10-11. «Adapting works of literature for the small or large screen» is jointly run by Media Desk Hellas and Arista, a British educational organization whose programs receive EU support. The seminar will move from general issues concerning adaptations to specific problems that face each medium, using examples of well-known films to arrive at guidelines. Meet the author Metaixmio publishers and Evripidis sti Stoa bookstore invite you to meet popular author Manos Eleftheriou. The writer will read from his latest novel, «The Woman Who Died Twice,» talk to the audience and sign copies of his book. (At Evripidis sti Stoa, 11 A. Papandreou, Halandri. Information: 210.361.5780.) Competition Hotel, a new annual publication, will focus on a different theme every year. Five talented young writers will each contribute a story, and a sixth story will come from the winner of a competition. This year’s theme is G.M. Vizyinos – Thracian-born father of the modern Greek short story. Contestants are asked to write a story in which the spirit of Vizyinos is present (in the manner that each writer perceives it). The judges are the five contributing writers – Christos Asteriou, Costas Kavanozis, Dimitra Kolliakou, Ilias Maglinis, and Mary Day – and literary critic Vangelis Hadzivassileiou, publisher Anna Pataki and Hotel editor Michel Fais. Hotel will be published in October, and the name of the winner will be announced at a special event. The competition is open to writers who have not yet published a work of prose. The stories should be in Greek, 5,000-7,000 words long, typed, double-spaced and be accompanied by a brief CV. Entries must be postmarked not later than June 30, 2006.
