The earthquake struck near the western shore of the island at 9.29 a.m. Seismologists said the quake was not a cause for concern as it was typical for an Ionian island. A 4 Richter quake was felt in Patras yesterday afternoon. No damage or injuries were reported.

Man caught selling 1.5 kilos of heroin to undercover policeman

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to sell some 1.5 kilos of heroin to an undercover officer in Serres, northern Greece, police said yesterday. The officer arranged to meet the suspect, a foreign national who was not named, and buy the heroin for 12,000 euros. Two men accompanied the suspect to the meeting. One was a foreign national who has already served a sentence for drug dealing. Police did not know the other man. Both men have been detained for questioning.

An improvised incendiary device was placed early yesterday outside an ATM in Thessaloniki, causing damage to the bank but no injuries, police said. The device, which contained cooking gas canisters, burst into flames next to the cash machine of a branch of Hellenic Bank in the area of Evosmo. No money was taken from the ATM.
