Lefkada rides 6.4-Richter earthquake 50 injuries; houses, roads damaged

Radical overhaul
The package of tax and welfare reforms pushed through by the German government is a milestone for the country and a road map for similar changes in the rest of Europe. Following reforms in the health sector, decided on July 21 and which are expected to trim Germany's state budget by 10 billion euros over the next year (moving the burden onto the shoulders of the insured), the German government has decided to make tax cuts...
COMMENTARY
A weak link
For years the government has turned a deaf ear to warnings about the economy. Prime Minister Costas Simitis himself has always taken comfort in illusions, believing that the economy is his most important card. However, after Greece achieved eurozone membership, citizens have returned to everyday reality - which was made even grimmer with the loss of their savings in the stock market crash.
OPINION
Athens center stage
For the first time ever, Athens has a starring role in the international media as host of the Olympics. More than the Games themselves, what will truly be interesting to see is whether Greeks are able to work quietly and efficiently for the common good. This is the greatest test, and it remains to be seen whether, and to what extent, Athens (and by extension the whole country) will benefit from the opportunity to really change Greeks' image in Europe.
