SAN MARINO: Rome, 5 – The United States has recognized an anti-communist interim government, comprising four ministers, of the smallest country in the world, San Marino, with a population of just 13,000. Italy has already given its recognition to the government. The US Consul General in Florence hastened to visit the anti-communist camp on the border of Italy and San Marino to officially announce his government’s decision. A representative of the San Marino administration made the following statement: “Let us hope that Great Britain will not delay in following (the USA) in recognizing this government... The appearance of Italian military tanks to boost the siege of San Marino has given rise to fears among the Reds that the Italian troops will invade their republic... it is believed likely that the Red government in San Marino will be forced to resign due to an outbreak of famine resulting from shortages of food, medicines and fuel.” The anti-communist administration is based in a half-built factory near the Italian border. A mile-wide no man’s land separates the two sides.
