Reds go top as PAOK shocks Panathinaikos

By George Georgakopoulos

Olympiakos has leapfrogged over Panathinaikos in the race for soccers Super League title as the Reds beat OFI 2-0 on Crete on Sunday and Panathinaikos lost at home to PAOK by the same score.

Playing behind closed doors due to fan action last month, Panathinaikos suffered its first home loss this season through a Lino penalty after 52 minutes and a Dimitris Salpigidis goal six minutes from time that saw PAOK consolidate itself at the third spot.

PAOK's former Greece keeper Costas Chalkias saved a Lazaros Christodoulopoulos penalty in injury time, following another great save in the second half, emerging as the game's most valuable player.

Olympiakos is now one point ahead of Panathinaikos with seven rounds of games left to play after its emphatic win over OFI courtesy of goals by Jose Holebas and Colin Kazim-Richards, one either side of the break.

This is making the upcoming derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos on March 18 a title showdown.

Asteras Tripolis climbed to sixth after thrashing Ergotelis 3-0 at home.

Levadiakos outscored Kerkyra in a seven-goal thriller at Livadia to win 4-3 and climb to the 10th spot, while fellow strugglers Doxa Dramas defeated visiting PAS Giannina 1-0.
