A 33-year-old Cretan man was remanded in custody in Tripoli jail after allegedly admitting to repeatedly raping and beating his six-year-old son. A prosecutor and investigating magistrate who heard the man’s testimony agreed that he should be remanded pending trial. The child has been under observation since Friday when he was hospitalized with a broken nose, heavy bruising and signs that he had been raped.

Police and robbers exchanged shots in Nea Ionia, northern Athens, early yesterday when a patrol car happened upon three armed robbers who had just held up a cafe and a grill house in the suburb. Nobody was injured during the exchange of fire. The robbers managed to evade arrest.

Hundreds of residents of the small town of Almyros, near Volos in central Greece, blocked a stretch of the national highway in their area yesterday, protesting plans by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to build a coal-fired power plant in the area. Residents say the plant would pollute the environment and pose a health risk.

Three men aged between 18 and 21 were arrested in the northern Athens suburb of Kifissia late on Sunday on suspicion of carrying out a series of muggings in the area and in the nearby neighborhood of Maroussi. The three suspects were caught shortly after they allegedly stole two mobile phones from a victim. Police said the three men, all Albanian nationals, were involved in at least seven muggings. Officers are looking into whether they had any accomplices.
