Swollen Evros prompts alert

Authorities in the Evros prefecture in Thrace were yesterday bracing themselves for another round of flooding, as the depth of the local river reached its highest level for more than 100 years.

At Pythion, north of Didymoteicho, the level of the rain-swollen River Evros had risen to 6.50 meters, whereas its emergency level is 5.70 meters. Authorities were last night preparing to have to ask some local residents to evacuate their homes because of the risk of flooding.

An estimated 3,300 hectares of land are believed to have been flooded since the river broke its banks almost two weeks ago but there were no casualties.

Meanwhile, checks carried out by local health officials found that the drinking water in a number of local areas was unsuitable due to the flooding. Residents in the affected communities are being supplied with water by the army.
