EISENHOWER AND SPUTNIK: Washington, 9 – At today’s weekly press conference at the White House, US President Dwight D. Eisenhower focused on the Soviet Union’s satellite Sputnik and the obvious advantage it gave the Russians in the sector of guided missiles that could put the US’s defense at risk. The president gave assurances that the US will be launching satellites in December and March and many other during 1958. “There is no reason for concern for national security simply because the Soviet Union has been successful in launching a satellite,” he said. ”The United States could also construct a similar satellite but that would be to the detriment of scientific and military objectives.” THE SATELLITE: London, 9 – The first successful attempt by man to create a moving object in space as a step toward conquering other worlds has fascinated the world. Continuing on its orbit, the artificial satellite is being watched by scientists and others in every country in the world. It has given rise to conflicting comments and predictions as to its fate. Moreover, it has raised the problem of an immediate need for cooperation between the major powers regarding the control of new weapons and preventing the outbreak of nuclear war.
