Cutting the Gordian knot

Olympic Airlines has plumbed the depths with the latest revelations. None of Greece’s governments in previous years has dared to solve the Gordian knot of the troubled state-owned carrier. Greek taxpayers keep putting money into the company while recent reports have taken a toll on the few remaining shreds of credibility.

Unlike in the past, the current minister has an in-depth knowledge of the issue and the management of the company has been assigned to a responsible technocrat. One hopes that the government will make a decision once it has a clear picture of relevant EU and European Court rulings. Prolonging the current situation is dangerous and, ultimately, only benefits Olympic’s competitors. The final decision must be made on the basis of facts and not recurring rumors about Greek and foreign investors. The Olympic chapter must soon come to a close. It’s a costly anachronism that is not befitting of a European country.
