New books on Engonopoulos and exhibition

A sketch by Engonopoulos of a male dancer’s costume for Elliniki Horodrama’s production of ‘The Ring and the Trumpet,’ 1957. Ink and watercolor on paper, from a private collection.

A flurry of events and publications mark the end of a year dedicated to poet and painter Nikos Engonopoulos. This week saw the opening of the exhibition and launch of the first catalogue raisonne of the multifaceted artist’s work at the Pireos Street wing of the Benaki Museum.

The product of five years’ work by art historian Katerina Perpinioti-Agazir, “Nikos Engonopoulos: His Pictorial World” is a lavish, bilingual Greek-French edition that records 1,128 of his works, from icons and designs for costumes to larger-scale paintings. It is published by the Benaki Museum and K. Adam publications with sponsorship from ABB.

The exhibition is a rare feast of words and pictures, displaying both poems and visual art by Engonopoulos, allowing the works to converse with one another. The display includes dance costumes made from his sketches.

Also out this week, from the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASKT) and the National Book Center of Greece (EKEBI), is “Poems in Motion.” The book celebrates the posters made by ASKT students to commemorate the centenary of Engonopoulos’s birth. Their imaginative, innovative posters then “traveled” on Greek public transport, carrying the poems of Engonpoulos to the general public.
