Washington backs IMF participation in Greek program
Washington has insisted on the participation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the Greek program while underlining the need for debt relief, Kathimerini understands.
In a telephone call between US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew with Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos late Tuesday, the former is said to have stressed the “key role of the IMF in the process of reforms,” while urging the Greek government “to cooperate closely with its international partners.”
Meanwhile Lew is said to have acknowledged the need for debt relief provided that Greece is meeting the commitments mandated by the bailout agreement.
Several Greek government officials, including Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, have recently indicated that they would prefer the IMF to no longer be part of the Greek program.
