Less drugs seized in Greece in 2014 but more cannabis destroyed
The amount of drugs seized in Greece last year was mostly down but there was a sharp rise in the number of cannabis plants destroyed by police.
According to data released by the police’s drugs squad, compared to 2013 there was a 57.9 percent drop in cocaine seizures, which amounted to just under 300 kilos. There was also a decline in the amount of cannabis confiscated, mainly because of the Albanian police having a stronger presence on the border with Greece, according to Greek officers.
There was a rise of 973 percent in the amount of heroin detected by authorities but this was due to the seizure of a single shipment when police found 2.1 tons of the drug on the Noor 1 tanker in June 2014.
The number of cannabis plants uprooted by officers more than doubled last year, when they totaled more than 52,000, compared to around 23,000 a year earlier.
