Turnout at an all-time low in Greek elections

Turnout at the May 6 general elections was at an all-time low, official figures published by the Interior Ministry have shown, with absentee ballots surpassing the percentage given to the first party.

New Democracy received 18.8 percent of from 6,476,751 ballots, or 65.10 percent of the total 9,949,401 people registered to vote. However, a percentage of 34.91 did not cast a ballot on Sunday, a figure that breaks the record of 2009, when one in three people did not vote.

The highest rate of abstention was registered in Florina in northern Greece, where 59.07 percent of the electorate did not turn out to vote, while in Attica the abstention rate was 24.64 percent.
